Jazz Times Review of Faces

...[a] rich, classical sound....when this lyric, dark quality shines through...the results are stunning...

AMG Review of Faces

The Segovian-trained classical guitarist’s wide ranging pastiche of traditional and popular modern styles adds an innovative boost to a genre that too often settles for lack of imagination with a good beat. It’s no coincidence that the opening track, “Flamenco Surf,” runs like a takeoff on Mason Williams’ “Classical Gas”; like Williams, Henderson on this tune inventively applies his brisk string style into a fast driving pop/rock context.
But this is just the start of a happily unpredictable ride. He then swings into a straight ahead jazz mode with bassist Jimmy Johnson; grabs the spotlight over a pounding synth dance groove; and even adds punchy solos throughout a silky R&B vocal ballad with Thelma Houston, creating a call and response effect. He doesn’t dwell on his flamenco propensities long, but his few lightning quick runs in this style — including the dramatically orchestrated “Cowboys in Spain” give the much heralded Jesse Cook a run for his money.
The trappings may change, but Henderson keeps the flow smooth with the unifying thread of his straightforward plucking and strumming.

Very Soothing Jazz

Fans of contemporary jazz will surely appreciate this release. Mr. Henderson’s guitar playing is superb. And, as a bonus treat, the incomparable Thelma Houston sings on the beautiful ballad “It Isn’t That Easy To Do.” Worth the price of admission just for this one track. Grab it while you can!!   More about Faces »

We bought this CD a year ago after hearing it in our local bookstore. We keep looking for another CD by this young and extremely talented artist. I have copied it over to tape to play in our car. It’s just superb!

Virtuoso performance with spanish & classical influences

Eric Henderson brings together classical, Spanish and Jazz influences in a way that demonstrates his mastery of the guitar. Although primarily an instrumental CD, several tracks feature guest artists providing solid performances. This CD is highly recommended.
